Raksha Bandhan is a popular Hindu festival celebrated mostly in South Asia. It is also celebrated in different parts of the world majorly influenced by the Hindu culture. On this day, sisters tie a talisman or amulet called the rakhi around the wrists of their brothers. They symbolically promise to protect them in all sorts of circumstances and receive a gift in return.

Raksha Bandhan is observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shravana. The expression “Raksha Bandhan” is derived from Sanskrit, which literally means “the bond of protection, obligation, or care.” It is now principally applied to this ritual.

Until the mid-20th century, there used to be a similar ritual that too held on the same day, with precedence in ancient Hindu texts. In the earlier rituals, a domestic priest ties amulets, charms, or threads on the wrists of his patrons, or changes their sacred thread, and receives gifts of money. Some places in India still observe this. By contrast, the sister-brother festival, with origins in folk culture, had names that varied with location

On this special day, people also exchange best wishes and messages to share with their brothers and sisters.
